Students who pursue this option can select elective courses that will prepare them for teaching environmental subjects. For teaching positions that do not require certification, a program of courses can be worked out between the student and his or her advisor to conform to the student's objectives. In this case the course of study to meet requirements for the BS degree is quite flexible.
However, employment in the public high schools in the State of Washington requires special consideration because the student needs an Initial Teacher Certificate and an approved subject endorsement to qualify to be hired as a teacher. To obtain these credentials as well as a BS in Environmental Science, a student must complete the Teacher Preparation Program in the College of Education as well as the BS in Environmental Science. Application packets for admission to the Teacher Preparation Program should be requested from the Teacher Education Student Services Center, 252 Cleveland Hall, Washington State University, Pullman, WA, 99164-2114, telephone 509-335-4855. Applications are due by March 31st for fall semester and October 31st for spring semester. Please include a statement that application also is being made to the BS Program in ES/RP.
The office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington maintains reciprocal agreements on teacher certification with 30 other states. Students seeking certification in another state should contact the relevant state offices of education to inquire about the extent to which certification in Washington satisfies local state certification requirements. A directory is available in the Teacher Education Student Services Center, Cleveland 252.
