Geology Program

Geology is the study of Earth, its composition, structure, origin and evolution. Virtually, every aspect of modern life is, in some way, dependent on the science of geology. The School of Earth & Environmental Sciences (SEES) at Washington State University offers both general and advanced training in most specializations in geology.

Washington State University's location in eastern Washington on the edge of the Columbia River Basalt plateau and only 8 miles from Idaho lets you visit and study numerous nearby field sits. The geology in the region is extremely varied with rocks of the idaho and Wallowa batholiths to the east and south, Columbia River basalts and Cascade volcanics to the west, and highly deformed and mineralized rocks of the Kootenai arc and the Coeur d'Alene and Republic mining districts to the north.

The SEES offers extensive courses of study leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Geology, Master of Science in Geology, and Doctor of Philosophy (Geology). Geology majors are expected to graduate with a complete understanding of earth, including its constituent materials, the environments and processes through which these materials form and interact, and its physical, chemical, and biological evolution. The students are expected to be capable of examining and interpreting relations among geologic materials in the field. Problem solving and critical thinking will be applied in the classroom, laboratory, and field, and effective communication skills will be expected. The students will demonstrate quantitative understanding of earth materials and processes.

Bachelor of Science in Geology:

The School offers two options to obtain the Bachelor of Science degree in Geology.

Minor in Geology:

A minor in Geology is also offered.

Graduate Studies:

Master of Science & Doctor of Philosophy:

Our graduate program offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees with specializations in Sedimentology-Stratigraphy, Structural Geology-Tectonics, Mineralogy-Petrology-Geochemistry, and Hydrogeology. Graduates with advanced degrees are well prepared for careers in industry and academia.

Geology Computer Laboratory:

The geology computer laboratory is to be used only by undergraduate majors, graduate students, staff and faculty of the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences, and other students carrying out formal Geology class assignmnets. The lab provides access to several PC and Mac computers, the internet, scanner, and laser printer. A wide variety of softwares are available, such as MS Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and more.

GeoAnalytical Lab:

Our analytical laboratory facilities are extensive and modern, and are available to the undergraduate and graduate students for their research. The analytical laboratories provide analysis not only nationwide but internationally as well.
